In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Iran has temporarily reopened its airspace exclusively for Indian evacuation operations, allowing stranded nationals—mainly students and pilgrims—to return home safely. The move comes amid the escalating Iran–Israel conflict, which had earlier prompted a complete closure of Iranian airspace to international traffic.
Delhi:Rare Corridor Amid Conflict
Following the eruption of hostilities between Iran and Israel on June 13, 2025, Iran had shut down its airspace citing severe security threats. However, in a rare exception, Tehran has now authorized Indian evacuation flights under Operation Sindhu, allowing safe passage for nationals stranded in the conflict zone.
Flight Details and Numbers
Under the new arrangement, approximately 1,000 Indian nationals, mostly students, are expected to arrive in New Delhi on June 20 and 21. The first flight, operated by Mahan Air through the Mashhad–Delhi route, is scheduled to land at 11:00 PM IST tonight. Two additional flights are planned for Saturday—one in the morning and one in the evening.
Earlier this week, India had already evacuated 110 students, including 90 from Kashmir Valley, by escorting them via land routes into Armenia, from where they were flown to India.

Diplomatic Coordination and Response
India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted that the safety of Indian citizens remains the government’s top priority. The evacuation operation has been coordinated in close collaboration with Iranian authorities, Armenian officials, and Indian missions in Tehran, Yerevan, and Tel Aviv.
India also expressed gratitude to both Iran and Armenia for facilitating the humanitarian corridor and ensuring the secure passage of its nationals amid heightened regional tensions.
Next Steps & Extended Operations
Beyond Iran, India is also planning evacuations from Israel, utilizing land-based transit routes under the broader scope of Operation Sindhu. The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv is actively supporting citizens seeking to leave the country.
Operation Sindhu underscores India’s capacity for rapid diplomatic engagement and emergency response. The safe return of over 1,000 Indians during an active conflict demonstrates effective coordination and the nation’s commitment to the welfare of its diaspora, even under the most challenging circumstances.
