Controversy Erupts After Ousted Russian Transport Minister Found Dead.

Moscow, Russia – July 9, 2025 – Controversy is swirling in Russia following the discovery of former Transport Minister Roman Starovoit, who was found dead from a gunshot wound shortly after being dismissed from President Vladimir Putin’s cabinet. Starovoit, 53, had been removed from his ministerial post just days prior, with the Russian government offering no clear explanation for his abrupt dismissal.
Starovoit had served as Transport Minister for only a year. Prior to his appointment, he had faced allegations of corruption, leading many to speculate that these accusations were the primary reason for his removal.

Corruption Allegations and Mysterious Circumstances.
Significant corruption allegations had recently emerged concerning the strengthening of the border with Ukraine in the Kursk region, where Starovoit’s previous role as governor had put his stance on the matter under scrutiny.
Confusion persists regarding the exact time of Starovoit’s death. His body was reportedly found inside his own Tesla car with a gunshot wound, and a pistol was reportedly found near his body. However, some Russian media outlets claim his body was discovered in a thicket. Footage of Starovoit’s black Tesla parked at a car park has also surfaced. Local news agency Mash reported that his girlfriend, Polina Korneev, identified the body.

Starovoit had served as the governor of the Kursk region for five years before being appointed Transport Minister in May of last year. Just three months into his tenure as Transport Minister, Ukrainian forces reportedly crossed the border into Kursk, raising questions about border security during his previous role.

Context of Ministerial Dismissal and Challenges in Transport Sector
Starovoit’s dismissal comes at a time when Russia’s transport sector is facing significant challenges as the war with Ukraine enters its fourth year. The Russian aviation industry is grappling with a severe shortage of spare parts, and Russian Railways, the country’s largest employer, is reportedly incurring massive losses due to the ongoing conflict. Following Starovoit’s removal, Andrey Nikitin has been appointed by President Putin as the new Transport Minister.

Comparisons to Other Mysterious Deaths
The mysterious death of Starovoit is drawing comparisons to other high-profile and similarly unexplained deaths of prominent figures in Russia, particularly that of Andrey Badalov, a leading figure in Russia’s oil industry. Badalov, 62, was found dead after reportedly falling from a great height in a large apartment building. He was the Vice President of Transneft, the state-owned oil pipeline monopoly. Russian media reported that although he lived on the 10th floor, he fell from the 17th floor. Authorities have stated it was a suicide, and a suicide note was reportedly found.

Some observers are highlighting that many individuals found dead under mysterious circumstances recently have been critics of President Putin. This group includes prominent businessmen, journalists, and military officials, fueling speculation and concern within and outside Russia. The timing and circumstances of Starovoit’s death, coupled with the lack of official transparency, are likely to intensify these discussions and raise further questions about the safety and fate of individuals who fall out of favor with the Russian government.
