ALAPPUZHA, Kerala – July 23, 2025 – Kerala today bid an emotional farewell to one of its most towering political figures, Comrade V.S. Achuthanandan, with his funeral rites completed amidst a sea of red flags and tearful tributes.
The veteran Communist leader was laid to rest in the hallowed revolutionary ground of Punnapra-Vayalar, alongside the martyrs of the historic uprisings, a place deeply symbolic of the ideals he championed throughout his long and impactful life.
Thousands had gathered from across the state and beyond to pay their last respects to “VS,” as he was affectionately known, a leader who symbolized unwavering commitment to the working class and relentless fight against corruption.
The funeral procession, which began earlier in the day, saw throngs of supporters lining the streets, chanting slogans in his memory and showering flowers on the cortege.
The final rites were performed in Punnapra, a place steeped in the history of Kerala’s Communist movement. It was a conscious choice to inter him in the very soil where the Punnapra-Vayalar martyrs, who laid down their lives in the armed struggles of 1946 against the oppressive rule of the Diwan of Travancore, found their final resting place. This location perfectly encapsulated Achuthanandan’s lifelong dedication to the socialist cause and his deep connection to the state’s revolutionary heritage.
At the cremation site, a solemn and dignified ceremony took place. His son, Arun Kumar, performed the final rituals and lit the pyre, marking the culmination of a life dedicated to public service and political activism. Senior leaders from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), representatives from other political parties, state ministers, and a vast number of party cadres and ordinary citizens were present, their faces reflecting profound grief and respect.
Throughout the day, eulogies poured in from across the political spectrum, acknowledging Achuthanandan’s unique place in Kerala’s history. He was remembered for his fiery speeches, his uncompromising stance on integrity, his mass appeal, and his relentless pursuit of justice for the marginalized. His political career, spanning over eight decades, saw him rise from a grassroots party worker to the Chief Minister of Kerala, leaving an indelible mark on the state’s social and political fabric.
The scenes at Punnapra today were a testament to the enduring legacy of V.S. Achuthanandan, a leader who, even in his final moments, remained deeply rooted in the revolutionary ideals that shaped his extraordinary journey. His passing marks the end of an era for Kerala’s Communist movement, but his memory and principles are set to continue inspiring generations.
