THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Kerala – Palode Ravi has resigned from his position as the President of the Thiruvananthapuram District Congress Committee (DCC) following the leak of a highly controversial phone conversation where he allegedly made pessimistic predictions about the Congress party’s electoral future in Kerala.
The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, MLA Sunny Joseph, confirmed on Saturday that he has accepted Ravi’s resignation, an action reportedly sought by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) leadership.
The Controversial Conversation:
The core of the controversy stems from an audio clip, widely aired by Malayalam television channels on Saturday, purportedly featuring a conversation between Palode Ravi and A. Jaleel, the Vamanapuram Block General Secretary. In the eight-minute-long conversation, Ravi reportedly expresses grave concerns about the Congress party’s prospects in upcoming local body and Assembly elections.
Key points from the leaked audio that caused significant embarrassment and put the party on the defensive include:
- Prediction of LDF’s Continued Rule: Ravi is heard stating that the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) will secure a third consecutive term in power in Kerala.
- Congress to be Third: He predicted that the Congress would be relegated to a “miserable third position” in the upcoming local body polls and would “fall flat” in the next Assembly elections.
- BJP’s Electoral Strategy: Ravi also alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) plans to heavily invest money in at least 60 Assembly constituencies to secure votes, potentially gaining a significant vote share and further pushing the Congress down.
- Internal Party Woes: He reportedly criticized “groupism and selfishness among local leaders,” lamenting the lack of mutual respect and trust within the party. Ravi also claimed that many leaders were only interested in “backstabbing each other” and that “nobody is working among the people.”
- Defections Predicted: He warned that Congress members, particularly from the Muslim community, might shift their allegiance to the CPI(M) and other parties, while others could defect to the BJP, rendering Congress “of no use to anyone” after the elections.
Party’s Response and Expulsion:
Following the leak, Palode Ravi issued a clarification, stating that his comments were intended as a “wake-up call” to motivate grassroots workers and emphasize the need to strengthen the organizational structure to challenge the LDF effectively. He claimed that only a small part of the conversation was taken out of context. However, the KPCC leadership took a serious view of the matter, deeming the remarks anti-organizational and deeply embarrassing, especially as the party has been projecting optimism about its electoral chances.
In a swift disciplinary action, KPCC President Sunny Joseph also announced the expulsion of A. Jaleel, the Vamanapuram Block General Secretary, from the primary membership of the Congress party. Jaleel’s expulsion was directly linked to his alleged role in leaking the controversial phone conversation.
Background of Internal Strife in Kerala Congress:
This incident further highlights the persistent internal conflicts and challenges within the Kerala Congress. The party has frequently grappled with factionalism and public disagreements among its leaders. Recent reports have also indicated: - Shashi Tharoor Controversy: A significant rift has emerged between MP Shashi Tharoor and sections of the Kerala Congress unit, with some leaders reportedly boycotting him over his perceived “pro-Modi” stance and his independent views, including a recent controversial article on the Emergency that criticized Indira Gandhi. Tharoor’s ambitions for a chief ministerial role have also contributed to friction.
- Leadership Debates: There have been ongoing discussions and alleged infighting over leadership positions, including the KPCC presidency, with concerns raised about internal unity ahead of crucial local body and Assembly elections.
The resignation of Palode Ravi and the expulsion of A. Jaleel underscore the KPCC’s attempt to exert authority and address internal dissent, particularly when it becomes public and undermines the party’s narrative. The incident is expected to fuel further debate about the Congress’s organizational strength and its prospects in the upcoming elections in Kerala.
