ISLAMABAD: A deadly explosion struck a cricket match in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, killing at least one person and injuring several others. The blast, which occurred on the Kausar Cricket Ground in the Bajaur district, sent panic through the crowd as players and spectators scrambled for safety.
According to Bajaur District Police Officer Waqas Rafique, the attack was a targeted one, carried out with an improvised explosive device (IED). The incident, which highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region, is suspected to be the work of militant groups. No organization has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
A viral video of the incident shows a thick plume of smoke billowing from the field as people can be seen running for their lives. The blast created a chaotic scene, with many rushing to help the injured. The wounded were immediately transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
The attack comes amid a recently launched anti-terrorism initiative by security forces in the area, known as “Operation Sarbakaf,” and follows a series of recent violent encounters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Police officials believe the attack is a retaliatory response to the ongoing security operations.
The incident is a grim reminder of the threats that have long plagued sports and public gatherings in Pakistan. While the country has made significant strides in improving security for international cricket teams in recent years, this latest attack underscores the continued instability in its northwestern regions and the persistent threat of terrorism.
