Leh, Ladakh – September 24, 2025Protests demanding statehood and the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution turned violent in Leh today, resulting in at least four deaths and over 70 injuries. The unrest prompted authorities to impose a curfew and prohibitory orders to restore order.
Violence Erupts During Shutdown
The violence erupted during a shutdown called by the youth wing of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), a prominent regional group. Protesters clashed with police, leading to the deaths of four individuals and injuries to at least 30 others. The situation escalated when demonstrators set fire to a BJP office and several vehicles. Police responded with baton charges and teargas to disperse the crowds.
Sonam Wangchuk Ends Hunger Strike
Climate activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a 15-day hunger strike in support of the statehood demand, called off his protest following the outbreak of violence. He appealed to the youth to cease the violence, stating that it undermines the cause and damages the movement’s credibility.
Government Response
In response to the unrest, the Leh administration imposed a curfew and prohibitory orders, banning public gatherings to restore order. The central government has scheduled talks with Ladakh representatives for October 6 to address the demands for statehood and constitutional safeguards.
Background
Ladakh was restructured as a Union Territory in August 2019, following the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir. Many in Ladakh, including Wangchuk, welcomed the move initially. However, over time, concerns have emerged regarding political representation and administrative autonomy, leading to widespread protests and hunger strikes.
The situation remains tense, with authorities urging calm and emphasizing the importance of dialogue to address the region’s concerns.
