Israel’s Defense Minister Declares Full Control Over Netzarim Corridor, Effectively Dividing Gaza into North and South.

As of October 1, 2025, Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, announced that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have completed the capture of the Netzarim Corridor, a strategic military buffer zone in central Gaza. This development effectively divides the Gaza Strip into northern and southern regions. Katz emphasized that this move will tighten the siege around Gaza City, with all civilian movement southward now required to pass through IDF checkpoints. He warned that those remaining in Gaza City would be considered terrorists or supporters of terrorism.

The IDF has also closed the Al-Rashid coastal road, the main route linking northern and southern Gaza, further isolating Gaza City from the rest of the enclave. Humanitarian organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, have suspended operations in Gaza City due to escalating violence and safety concerns.

This military action coincides with ongoing discussions about a U.S.-brokered peace proposal, which includes provisions for a ceasefire, hostage exchanges, and the establishment of a transitional government. However, the proposal has been met with resistance from Hamas, which seeks adjustments to the terms, including guarantees for Israeli withdrawal and protection for its leadership.
