Intelligence Bureau Recommends CBI Probe into Sabarimala Gold Heist

Thiruvananthapuram:
The Central Intelligence Bureau (IB) has reportedly recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged gold theft at the Sabarimala temple, citing the seriousness of the allegations, possible interstate ramifications, and concerns over lapses in security and monitoring.

According to highly placed sources, the IB’s assessment points to systemic failures in the handling, transportation, and accounting of gold and valuables linked to the Sabarimala shrine, one of the most prominent pilgrimage centres in the country. The agency is said to have flagged the issue to the Union Home Ministry, stressing the need for an independent central investigation to ensure transparency and public confidence.

Allegations and Background

The controversy centres on allegations that a significant quantity of gold and valuables, believed to be part of temple assets and offerings, went missing during handling and transfer. While preliminary inquiries were conducted by state agencies, questions remain over accountability, documentation, and the chain of custody of the gold.

Sources indicate that discrepancies were noticed during internal audits and subsequent verifications, prompting demands for a deeper probe. Given Sabarimala’s pan-Indian and international pilgrim base, the IB reportedly views the matter as having national importance, warranting a central agency’s involvement.

Intelligence Bureau’s Concerns

The IB is understood to have raised concerns over:

  • Inadequate oversight mechanisms in the management of high-value temple assets
  • Possible collusion or organised theft, which may extend beyond state boundaries
  • The need to examine the role of officials, contractors, and intermediaries involved in logistics and security

The agency has reportedly suggested that only a CBI-led investigation would have the authority and reach to examine financial trails, interstate links, and any potential organised network behind the alleged theft.

Political and Public Reactions

The recommendation has sparked renewed political debate in Kerala, with opposition parties reiterating their long-standing demand for a CBI probe. They argue that a central investigation is essential to protect the sanctity of the temple and restore devotees’ trust.

The state government, meanwhile, has maintained that existing investigations are progressing, though it has not formally responded to the IB recommendation. Legal experts note that the final decision on a CBI inquiry rests with the Union Government, or alternatively, could be ordered by the courts.

What Lies Ahead

If approved, a CBI probe would involve a fresh examination of records, audits, witness statements, and security protocols, potentially reopening aspects of the case that were earlier closed or left inconclusive. For millions of devotees, the outcome is seen as crucial not just for accountability, but for safeguarding the integrity of one of India’s most revered temples.
