Stoppage-Time Strike by Eustáquio Sends Canada into Round of 16, South Africa Eliminated

Los Angeles: Canada became the first team to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after edging South Africa 1-0 in their Round of 32 clash on Monday.

Stephen Eustáquio scored the decisive goal in the second minute of stoppage time, sealing a historic victory for Canada and booking the nation’s first-ever place in the World Cup knockout stage.

Both teams adopted an attacking approach from the outset. South Africa came close to taking the lead in the sixth minute when Teboho Mokoena’s effort narrowly missed the target. Canada responded soon after, but Eustáquio’s long-range strike sailed over the crossbar. Jonathan David also threatened in the 17th minute, but his attempt from a corner failed to find the net.

Canada dominated the closing stages of the first half, creating a series of dangerous opportunities. A goal-bound effort from a corner was dramatically cleared off the line by the South African defence, while goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced a string of fine saves to keep his side in the contest. The teams went into the break locked at 0-0.

The attacking intensity continued after the restart. Oswin Appollis fired wide for South Africa in the 62nd minute, while Canada’s swift counter-attacks repeatedly tested the South African backline. The introduction of Alphonso Davies in the 75th minute added greater pace and sharpness to Canada’s attacking play.

Just as the match appeared destined for extra time, Canada found the breakthrough. A cross from the right flank was only partially cleared by the South African defence, and Eustáquio pounced on the loose ball before unleashing a powerful strike into the back of the net.

South Africa failed to mount a late response, as Canada held firm to claim a landmark victory and advance to the Round of 16 for the first time in the country’s World Cup history.
