TEL AVIV/TABUK: What began as a routine Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a terrifying mid-air emergency when violence erupted inside the cockpit. Within seconds, the aircraft plunged thousands of feet, leaving passengers facing what could have become a catastrophic disaster.
At the centre of the dramatic rescue was Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, who was seriously injured during the incident but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to intervene.
The aircraft, carrying around 174 people, was eventually diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it made a safe emergency landing.
Aircraft Plunged 14,000 Feet
Flydubai flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX, was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the incident occurred.
According to international media reports, the aircraft lost approximately 14,000 feet of altitude within about 30 seconds during the chaos.
Passengers were left terrified as the aircraft rapidly descended.
Inside the cockpit, Captain Machchhar had reportedly been attacked and seriously injured. Despite his condition, he was able to open the cockpit door.
That moment proved critical.
Passengers Rushed Into the Cockpit
Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayoun, a plumber, was among those who entered the cockpit.
According to accounts reported by international media, Hayoun and other passengers confronted the attacker and helped prevent further interference with the aircraft controls.
Hayoun later described how he helped stabilise the aircraft. He reportedly said that some of his knowledge of aircraft emergencies came from watching television programmes such as Air Crash Investigation.
What followed was an extraordinary combination of passenger intervention and professional aviation skills.
A Plumber, a Dentist and Other Passengers Joined the Rescue
Captain Machchhar was not the only person who played a crucial role.
Reports identified several passengers who helped during the emergency, including:
- Yaniv Hayoun, a plumber who entered the cockpit;
- Shota Musayev, a dentist who helped injured passengers and crew;
- Other passengers who helped restrain the attacker;
- Additional pilots aboard the aircraft who eventually took control.
Together, they helped prevent the situation from turning into a major aviation disaster.
Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia
With the aircraft in serious difficulty, the flight was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The Boeing 737 eventually landed safely at Tabuk’s airport.
After the emergency landing, passengers were later transported to Tel Aviv on another Flydubai aircraft.
For many of those on board, reaching Israel safely was an emotional moment after what they had experienced in the air.
One passenger told Reuters:
“It was a miracle… we thank God that we survived it.”
Netanyahu Calls Indian Pilot a “True Hero”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Captain Smit Machchhar for his actions during the emergency.
Netanyahu described the Indian pilot as:
“A true hero.”
He said Machchhar’s actions helped save the lives of those aboard the aircraft.
Netanyahu also praised passenger Yaniv Hayoun, who helped inside the cockpit.
According to reports, Netanyahu embraced Hayoun and told him:
“I see you and I see a lion — a big hero.”
Trump Also Praises the Indian Pilot
Former U.S. President Donald Trump also commented on the incident after speaking with Netanyahu.
Trump described the Indian pilot as “a hero”, praising the courage shown during the emergency.
Trump also indicated that some of the information he was sharing had come from Netanyahu and had not been independently verified by him.
Who Is Captain Smit Machchhar?
Captain Smit Machchhar is an experienced Indian commercial pilot with extensive experience flying Boeing 737 aircraft.
According to reports:
✈️ Aviation experience: Around 13 years
✈️ Aircraft experience: Boeing 737 family
✈️ Reported Boeing 737 flying time: Around 9,750 hours
✈️ Previous airline: SpiceJet
✈️ Joined Flydubai: 2022
Reports say Machchhar spent many years flying Boeing 737 aircraft before joining Flydubai.
His extensive experience became particularly significant during the rapidly developing emergency.
Seconds Between Disaster and Survival
The most dramatic element of the incident was the combination of several events happening almost simultaneously.
A seriously injured pilot was inside the cockpit.
The aircraft was rapidly losing altitude.
Passengers were struggling to understand what was happening.
Then the cockpit door opened.
Passengers entered.
The attacker was confronted.
Other pilots took control.
And the aircraft was eventually brought safely to the ground in Saudi Arabia.
What could have become a catastrophic aviation disaster instead ended with the aircraft safely on the ground and the passengers alive.
Heroism Beyond One Pilot
Although Captain Smit Machchhar has received international attention, reports indicate that the successful outcome involved the actions of several people.
An injured Indian pilot who kept fighting to protect the aircraft.
A plumber who entered the cockpit.
A dentist who helped the injured.
Passengers who confronted the attacker.
Other pilots who took control of the aircraft.
And the crew that carried out the emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Their combined actions turned a terrifying situation into a remarkable story of survival.

Important: Authorities are still investigating the incident and the motive behind the cockpit attack. While Israeli officials have described it as an apparent attempt to interfere with or crash the aircraft, the precise motive has not been conclusively established. Flydubai has also urged against premature speculation while the investigation continues.
