A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, primarily affecting the region near Mandalay. The tremor, with a depth of 10 km, caused significant destruction, including building collapses and infrastructure damage. The death toll in Myanmar has reached at least 694, with 1,670 injured and 68 missing.
Following the initial quake, 14 aftershocks were recorded within 10 hours, the strongest measuring 6.7 in magnitude. These tremors were felt as far as Bangkok, Thailand, where a 30-story building collapsed, resulting in at least eight deaths and leaving 81 construction workers missing.
The earthquake’s epicenter was near the city of Sagaing, close to Mandalay. The region’s susceptibility to seismic activity is due to its location along the Sagaing Fault, a major geological fault line. The last significant earthquake in Myanmar occurred in 1912, with a magnitude of 7.9.
In response to the disaster, Myanmar’s government has declared a state of emergency in the affected regions and has requested international assistance. Countries including China, Russia, India, Malaysia, and the United Nations have mobilized aid to support relief efforts.
