New Delhi, August 15 – In a recent interview, senior BJP leader Uma Bharti made a strong statement regarding the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, describing his killer, Nathuram Godse, as a “terrorist” and his act as a “heinous crime” that was worse than terrorism.
Bharti, known for her candid and often fiery comments, said that Godse’s crime could not be adequately described by the word “terrorism” alone. She emphasized that he killed a person who was a visionary for an independent India, someone who dreamed of a self-reliant nation not dependent on foreign loans.
In her remarks, Bharti stated, “The sin that Nathuram Godse committed cannot be sufficiently described by the word terrorism. He killed a man who was dreaming of what an independent India would be like.” She further added, “We cannot lessen the gravity of his sin by merely calling him a terrorist.”
This is not the first time Uma Bharti has commented on Godse. In 2016, she had referred to him as a “sarfira” (crazy person) and stated that while Godse took Gandhi’s life, his ideology was immortal.
Her recent statements come at a time when there is renewed debate and public discussion around historical figures and their actions. Bharti’s comments stand in contrast to some other figures within the right-wing ecosystem who have been more lenient or even laudatory of Godse. Her clear and unequivocal condemnation of his actions has been noted by political observers.
