Centre Withdraws Z-Category Security for Delhi CM Rekha Gupta, Security Responsibility Transferred to Delhi Police.

New Delhi: In a sudden and unexpected move, the Central government has withdrawn the Z-category security cover provided to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The decision, which comes just days after the elite Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was tasked with her protection, means that the responsibility for her security has been handed back to the Delhi Police.

The Z-category security was granted to the Chief Minister following an attack on her at her camp office in the Civil Lines area on August 20. Gupta, 51, was assaulted by a man during a ‘Jan Sunwai’ (public hearing) program, an incident her office described as a “well-planned conspiracy to kill her.” Following the attack, the Union Home Ministry had directed the CRPF VIP security wing to provide her with Z-category protection.

However, according to official sources, the formal orders for the CRPF protection were pending when the Centre abruptly changed its decision and issued withdrawal orders instead. The Delhi Police, which had been investigating the attack and has so far arrested two individuals, including the prime accused, has now been reinstated as the sole agency responsible for the Chief Minister’s security.

This reversal has sparked speculation and criticism from some political quarters. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has questioned the Centre’s decision, with some leaders alleging that it is a politically motivated move. The Delhi Police has been instructed to ensure the Chief Minister’s safety and to increase the number of personnel assigned to her security detail.

While the Chief Minister will continue to receive security, the withdrawal of the specialized CRPF cover marks a significant change. The incident has put a spotlight on the delicate relationship between the Central government and the Delhi administration regarding security protocols for key political figures in the national capital.
