Moscow:In a significant and unprecedented development in the ongoing conflict, Russia has for the first time successfully used a naval drone to sink a Ukrainian warship. The target of the attack was the Ukrainian Navy’s reconnaissance ship, the Simferopol, which was struck in the Danube River delta.
The Russian Ministry of Defence claimed the strike was carried out by a high-speed uncrewed surface vehicle (USV), resulting in the sinking of the vessel. The attack marks a new chapter in the naval dimension of the war, where Ukraine has previously held the advantage in drone warfare, using its own fleet of uncrewed surface vehicles to great effect against the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
The Simferopol, a Laguna-class medium reconnaissance ship, was the largest vessel commissioned by Ukraine since 2014, having entered service in 2021. It was equipped with advanced electronic, radar, and optical reconnaissance systems.
Ukraine’s Reaction and Response
The Ukrainian Navy has confirmed the strike and casualties. In a statement to the Kyiv Independent and Ukrinform, Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk confirmed the attack on the ship. “We confirm the fact of the strike on the ship,” Pletenchuk said. “Currently, the elimination of the consequences of the attack is ongoing. The overwhelming majority of the crew is safe. The search for several sailors continues. Unfortunately, one crew member was killed, and several were wounded.”
The attack on the Simferopol occurred amidst a massive overnight missile and drone barrage by Russia on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, which resulted in significant casualties. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a strong international response to these escalating attacks, urging for “new, tough sanctions” against Russia and criticizing countries that have remained silent.
In a tit-for-tat move, Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (GUR) has claimed it damaged a small missile-carrying Russian warship in the Sea of Azov in a separate operation. GUR stated that as a result of the strikes, the Russian ship was “forced to leave the combat duty area.”
The use of naval drones by Russia signifies a shift in its military tactics, mirroring a strategy that Ukraine has used to its advantage throughout the conflict. As both sides continue to expand their drone warfare capabilities, the maritime conflict in the Black Sea and surrounding waterways is poised to intensify further. The UN Security Council is expected to hold an emergency meeting at the request of Ukraine and its European partners to address the worsening security situation.
