Thiruvananthapuram:Widespread protests have intensified across Kerala following a brutal assault on a young man by police officers. Political parties and various youth organizations have announced that they will escalate their agitation and will not back down until the officers responsible are dismissed from service.
The incident came to light after CCTV footage from a police station was released by the State Information Commission (SIC), showing the alleged assault. The video shows Youth Congress leader V.S. Sujith being beaten by police officers, including a sub-inspector, inside the police station. The incident, which occurred in April 2023, resurfaced with the release of the video on September 3, 2025.
According to reports, Sujith was taken into custody after he questioned police officers who were allegedly intimidating his friends on the roadside. The CCTV footage, which has since gone viral, shows multiple police personnel physically assaulting him. The images have sparked outrage, with many questioning the “barbaric” and “unlawful” use of force by the police.
In response to the public outcry, senior political leaders have weighed in on the matter. Ramesh Chennithala, a senior Congress leader, has demanded the immediate dismissal of the officers involved, stating that there is “no excuse for shielding such officers” now that the video evidence has emerged. The court had also previously taken the “extraordinary step” of directly registering a case against the policemen involved, further validating the victim’s claims.
The protest movement is now gaining significant traction, with demonstrators vowing to continue their fight until the accused officers are not only suspended, but permanently removed from the police force. The incident has once again brought the issue of police brutality and accountability to the forefront of public discourse in Kerala.
