Punjab Flood Death Toll Rises to 37; All 23 Districts Affected by Worst Deluge Since 1988.

Jalandhar:The state of Punjab has been gripped by its most devastating floods in nearly four decades, with the death toll rising to 37 as of September 3, 2025. The unrelenting heavy monsoon rains have caused widespread damage, affecting all 23 districts and submerging over 1,400 villages.

According to a bulletin from the state government, more than 3.5 lakh (350,000) people have been impacted by the floods, with rescue and relief operations in full swing. The rising water levels in the Beas, Sutlej, and Ravi rivers, combined with heavy downpours in the catchment areas of neighboring Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, have exacerbated the situation.

The disaster has caused immense damage to agriculture, with preliminary reports indicating that more than 3.75 lakh acres of farmland have been submerged. The worst-hit districts in terms of agricultural loss include Gurdaspur, Mansa, Amritsar, Fazilka, and Ferozepur.

The highest number of fatalities has been reported in Hoshiarpur (7 deaths), followed by Pathankot (6 deaths), and Barnala (5 deaths). In some cases, people have died due to house collapses, while others have been swept away by the floodwaters.

In response to the crisis, the state government has declared Punjab a “disaster-affected state.” The Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Border Security Force (BSF) have been deployed to assist in rescue and relief efforts. Schools, colleges, and universities across the state have been ordered to remain closed until September 7 as a precautionary measure.
