SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — December 14, 2025 — A mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach has resulted in at least 12 people killed and nearly 30 injured, in what New South Wales police have classified as a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening during the first night of Hanukkah, when crowds had gathered near the Bondi Park Playground for the public “Chanukah by the Sea” event hosted by Chabad of Bondi.
Police say two gunmen opened fire on bystanders around 6:45 p.m. local time, causing panic and chaos as people fled along the beach and park.
Authorities confirmed that one of the shooters was killed at the scene, while the other was taken into custody in critical condition.
Emergency services transported numerous victims to hospitals across Sydney, including both civilians and at least two police officers.
Government officials have condemned the atrocity. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described it as a “devastating terrorist incident” that specifically targeted Jewish Australians and pledged support for the affected community.
Eyewitness footage shared on social media showed people running for cover, with bystanders describing dozens of shots fired in quick succession. In some clips, civilians were seen tackling and disarming one of the attackers as others sought shelter.
Police are investigating the precise motive behind the rampage and have cautioned the public that the situation is still under active investigation, urging people to avoid the Bondi Beach area.
This tragic event is one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern Australian history and has prompted worldwide condemnation and calls for unity against hate and violence.
