Dhaka:
A 28-year-old Hindu auto-rickshaw driver was brutally beaten and stabbed to death by a group of people in Bangladesh, in an incident that has triggered widespread outrage and renewed concerns over minority safety in the country, according to local media reports.
The victim, identified as a daily-wage auto driver, was allegedly attacked after a group of individuals arrived at the scene and began assaulting him without provocation. Witnesses told local reporters that the attackers acted in a coordinated manner, mercilessly beating the man before stabbing him multiple times. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot due to severe blood loss.
Preliminary reports suggest that the assault took place in a public area, raising serious questions about law and order and the failure to prevent mob violence. Locals said the victim was pleading for help, but fear prevented immediate intervention as the attackers were reportedly armed and aggressive.
Police officials confirmed that an investigation has been launched and that efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved. “We are examining CCTV footage and questioning witnesses. Those responsible will be brought to justice,” a senior police officer said, adding that no arrests had been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
Human rights groups and members of the Hindu community have condemned the killing, calling it a “barbaric act” and demanding swift and transparent action. They also urged the Bangladeshi authorities to ensure adequate protection for religious minorities, who have repeatedly raised concerns over targeted violence and discrimination.
The incident has sparked protests and strong reactions on social media, with many users demanding accountability and stricter measures to curb mob violence. Community leaders warned that failure to act decisively could further deepen fear and mistrust among minority communities.
Authorities have appealed for calm while assuring that the case will be handled with seriousness. The victim’s family has demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible, stating that justice alone can prevent such crimes from recurring.
