Mexico City: Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the ruthless leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) — one of the world’s most powerful and vicious drug trafficking organisations — has been killed by Mexican security forces, in what officials are calling a historic blow to organised crime.
What Happened?
Mexican Army and National Guard special units carried out a military raid on February 22, 2026 in Tapalpa, Jalisco — the home base of CJNG — targeting El Mencho. During the operation, he was wounded and later died en route to Mexico City for medical care, according to Mexico’s Defense Ministry. Several cartel members were also killed, and arrests were made.
The operation was supported by intelligence cooperation from the United States, which had placed a $15 million bounty on El Mencho, making him one of the most sought-after fugitives in the world.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau described him as “one of the bloodiest and most ruthless drug kingpins,” and acknowledged U.S. assistance in the mission.
Violence Follows the Raid
His death sparked major unrest across Mexico as cartel members retaliated with road blockades, burning vehicles, shootouts, and attacks on security forces. Multiple states reported chaos; Mexico’s State Department even issued safety alerts for Americans in affected regions.
According to Mexican officials, at least 25 National Guard members, a security guard, and civilians were killed in coordinated cartel attacks after the raid, illustrating the dangerous power vacuum left by El Mencho’s death.
Who Was El Mencho?
- Born in Mexico and rising from modest beginnings, El Mencho became the founder and leader of the CJNG, which expanded aggressively across Mexico and into the United States.
- Under his leadership, the cartel became notorious for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin, and developing a reputation for extreme violence and sophisticated weaponry.
- The CJNG was designated a foreign terrorist organisation by the U.S. government, highlighting the threat it posed beyond Mexico.
History of CJNG
Founded in the early 2010s, the CJNG grew rapidly by defeating rival cartels such as the Knights Templar Cartel in violent turf wars and establishing a broad network for trafficking drugs into the United States.
Despite international pressure and repeated indictments in U.S. courts, El Mencho evaded capture for years, maintaining tight operational security.
Official Reactions
- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised security forces for their success.
- The U.S. State Department confirmed its backing of the operation and warned American citizens in parts of Mexico to stay safe.
Significance
El Mencho’s death is considered the most significant cartel takedown in Mexico since the capture of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, shifting the landscape of organised crime but also raising concerns about possible cartel fragmentation or escalated violence as rival factions vie for control.
