Gandhi’s Great-Granddaughter Ashish Lata Ramgobin Sentenced to 7 Years in South Africa for ₹3.2 Crore Fraud.

Durban Court Convicts Mahatma Gandhi’s Descendant in Major Financial Crime

Ashish Lata Ramgobin, the great-granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi and daughter of prominent human rights activist Ela Gandhi, has been sentenced to seven years in prison by a South African court in a high-profile fraud case involving over ₹3.22 crore (R6.2 million).

The 56-year-old was found guilty of forging banking documents and commercial paperwork, including fake invoices and bank confirmation letters. These falsified documents were used to deceive an Indian-origin businessman, SR Maharaj, under the pretext of importing linen for South Africa’s NetCare hospitals.

Ramgobin claimed that the linen consignment was being delayed at customs and requested financial assistance to expedite the process. Trusting her high-profile lineage and the authenticity of the documents, Maharaj advanced funds — which were never recovered.

Legal Proceedings and Conviction

The fraud, which dates back to 2015, was thoroughly investigated by South African authorities. Ramgobin was initially granted temporary bail of 50,000 South African Rand (approximately ₹2.5 lakh). However, after a prolonged legal process, the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court found her guilty of both fraud and forgery.

In June 2025, the court handed her a seven-year prison sentence. Her application for leave to appeal the judgment was denied, though her legal team is now seeking recourse in the Durban High Court.

Ramgobin is the granddaughter of Ela Gandhi, a celebrated anti-apartheid campaigner and granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi. The incident has caused public shock and drawn widespread attention, particularly because of the contrast between her actions and the moral legacy of her forefather.

While some have voiced concern over the use of Gandhi’s name in connection with a crime, others see the case as a reminder that no one is above the law — regardless of lineage.
