Prime Minister Narendra Modi Honoured with Cyprus’ Highest Civilian Award: The Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III
Nicosia, Cyprus | June 16, 2025 — In a significant diplomatic gesture, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the highest civilian honour bestowed by the Republic of Cyprus. The award was presented by President Nikos Christodoulides during Modi’s official visit to Cyprus.
This is the first time in over two decades that an Indian Prime Minister has visited the Mediterranean island nation, marking a historic step in revitalising Indo-Cypriot relations.
Symbol of Strengthening Ties
The Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III is named after Cyprus’ first president and is awarded to distinguished personalities for exceptional service to the Republic of Cyprus. By honouring Prime Minister Modi, Cyprus acknowledged India’s growing role in global affairs and Modi’s personal contributions to fostering strong bilateral and international partnerships.
The Cypriot President praised Modi’s leadership in promoting global peace, multilateral cooperation, and South-South solidarity, particularly in climate change, technology, and trade.
Diplomatic Engagements
During the two-day visit, Prime Minister Modi held high-level meetings with President Christodoulides and other top Cypriot officials. Both sides discussed:
Strengthening trade and investment
Collaborating in renewable energy and digital innovation
Enhancing educational and cultural exchange
Mutual support in multilateral forums, including the United Nations
Modi also paid tribute at a memorial dedicated to Cypriot independence heroes and visited cultural landmarks in Nicosia.
Modi’s Remarks
In his acceptance speech, Prime Minister Modi said:
“I am deeply honoured to receive the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III. This is not only a recognition of my country, India, but also a testament to the historic friendship and shared democratic values between our two nations.”
He also reiterated India’s support for Cyprus’ sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling for a peaceful and lasting resolution to the island’s long-standing division.
A Historic Visit
This visit, the first since former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure, is expected to open new chapters in cooperation between India and Cyprus — a member of the European Union and a strategic bridge between Asia and Europe.
