Tehran, Iran – Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, made his first public appearance in months on Saturday, participating in a religious ceremony in Tehran as tensions with Israel continue to escalate.
His re-emergence in public view follows widespread reports that he had been in a secure, undisclosed location since a 12-day aerial bombardment campaign erupted between Iran and Israel, an offensive that saw several high-ranking Iranian leaders, including military commanders and nuclear experts, killed.
Reuters, citing state television, reported that footage showed Khamenei entering a hall with a large crowd commemorating Ashura, one of the most significant days in the Shia Muslim calendar.
Dressed in traditional black attire, Khamenei was seen walking onto a stage frequently used for major state and religious events, while attendees chanted religious slogans.
This marks the Supreme Leader’s first public event since the conflict began on June 13. In the initial days of the aerial attacks, Khamenei notably avoided direct public appearances, opting instead to issue pre-recorded messages. His absence from public events during this period fueled speculation about his whereabouts, particularly due to heightened security concerns amidst the escalating conflict.
Iranian officials later clarified that the decision to broadcast his speeches, including his annual address on major religious celebrations, via pre-recorded video messages during this time was made in light of enhanced security protocols due to the increasing regional tensions.
The Israeli conflict, characterized by extensive aerial bombardments and covert operations, has raised significant concerns about broader regional instability. While both sides have exchanged threats and engaged in low-level retaliatory actions, the Iranian leadership has consistently projected an image of strength, even amid mounting international pressure.
Khamenei’s public return appears to be a deliberate move to reinforce this image and dispel any rumors regarding his health or security, sending a clear message of continuity and resolve to both domestic and international audiences.
