Karnataka Minister Proposes Penguin Park at Mysuru’s Karanji Lake.

Bengaluru, July 11: Karnataka’s Minister for Forests, Environment, and Zoological Sciences, Eshwar B. Khandre, has proposed the establishment of a penguin park at Karanji Lake in Mysuru, marking a major step in the state’s efforts to modernize zoo infrastructure and attract more tourists.

The announcement was made during the 159th Administrative Board Meeting of the Karnataka Zoo Authority, held at Vikas Soudha in Bengaluru. Minister Khandre directed department officials to submit a formal proposal for the penguin park without delay, citing expert assessments that found the current aquarium building next to Mysuru Zoo suitable for conversion into a controlled habitat for penguins.

“This move will not only enhance the appeal of Mysuru Zoo but also contribute to conservation education and tourism,” said the Minister.

Khandre also outlined a comprehensive vision to transform the state’s zoological facilities. He emphasized the need to improve zoo infrastructure, diversify wildlife exhibits, and enhance the visitor experience as part of a broader tourism development strategy. Introducing internationally popular species like penguins, he stated, could significantly increase footfall and engagement.

As part of the long-term plan, the Minister urged zoo authorities to establish exchange programs with international zoos to bring in exotic species while adhering to global welfare and conservation standards.

A major focus of Khandre’s address was financial autonomy. He stated that all zoos in Karnataka should aim for complete financial self-sufficiency within five years—generating enough revenue through ticket sales, events, and sponsorships to cover operational costs.

“The goal is to make our zoos financially independent, ecologically responsible, and globally recognized,” Khandre added.

If approved and implemented, the penguin park at Karanji Lake could become a first-of-its-kind attraction in South India, potentially positioning Mysuru as a leading wildlife tourism hub.
