JERUSALEM: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has initiated an intense, full-scale offensive to gain complete control of Gaza City, marking the latest and most dangerous phase of the conflict. The military has declared the city, the most populated in the Gaza Strip, a “dangerous combat zone,” leading to a renewed wave of displacement as residents flee to the already overcrowded southern areas.
The IDF has intensified its bombardment of the city, with reports of heavy shelling and air strikes in and around Gaza City. The move follows a directive from the Israeli government to dismantle Hamas and secure the return of the remaining hostages. Israel has stated that the extreme level of force will continue until these objectives are met.
As the assault began, humanitarian aid agencies and UN officials expressed grave concerns about the welfare of the civilian population, many of whom are already enduring famine-like conditions. With the IDF suspending humanitarian pauses, the situation for the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians still in Gaza City is becoming increasingly dire.
In response to the escalating violence, Palestinian families are once again on the move, abandoning their homes and seeking refuge in the southern part of the enclave, where resources are scarce and living conditions are already strained. The international community has condemned the expansion of the war, citing the potential for a catastrophic humanitarian impact on the civilian population.
