Mumbai:
The Indian National Congress has announced that it will contest 528 seats in the upcoming municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra, scheduled to be held on January 15. The decision was finalised after extensive consultations within the party’s state leadership and election strategy committees.
According to senior Congress leaders, the party aims to strengthen its presence in urban local bodies by fielding candidates across major municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Thane, Nashik, and other key cities. The Congress plans to focus on local governance issues such as civic infrastructure, water supply, waste management, public transport, and employment opportunities.
Party sources said that candidate selection was carried out with emphasis on winnability, grassroots connection, and social representation, giving importance to youth, women, and members from marginalised communities. The Congress leadership also indicated that the campaign would highlight what it described as the failures of the ruling parties in addressing rising living costs and deteriorating civic services.
The municipal corporation elections are being viewed as a crucial political test ahead of future state and national elections. Political observers believe the Congress’s decision to contest a large number of seats signals its intent to reclaim lost urban space and reassert itself as a strong opposition force in Maharashtra.
The elections on January 15 are expected to witness a multi-cornered contest, with major parties deploying high-profile leaders and intensive campaigns across urban Maharashtra.
