New Delhi:
Tensions flared sharply in Nepal after a controversial TikTok video sparked violent clashes in several areas, leading to the vandalisation of a Christian church and forcing authorities to temporarily close parts of the India–Nepal border as a precautionary security measure.
According to Nepali media outlets, including The Kathmandu Post and Online Khabar, the unrest began after a TikTok video allegedly containing content deemed offensive to religious sentiments went viral. The video triggered protests that quickly escalated into clashes between groups in parts of eastern and central Nepal.
Church Attacked Amid Rising Tensions
Local reports said an angry mob targeted a church during the violence, damaging property and creating panic among residents. No fatalities were officially confirmed, but several people were reportedly injured, and police detained multiple individuals to prevent further escalation.
Nepal Police stated that additional security forces were deployed in sensitive areas, and internet monitoring was intensified to prevent the spread of inflammatory content. Authorities also urged social media users to refrain from sharing unverified or provocative material.
India–Nepal Border Closure
In response to the unrest, Indian and Nepali authorities coordinated to temporarily close select crossing points along the open India–Nepal border, citing security concerns. Indian officials said the move was precautionary, aimed at preventing the spillover of violence and maintaining law and order in border districts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
International media, including Reuters and BBC South Asia, reported that while the border closure was partial and temporary, it highlighted the seriousness with which both governments viewed the situation.
Government and International Reaction
The Nepal government condemned the violence and the attack on religious property, reiterating its commitment to secularism and religious harmony. A senior Home Ministry official told Nepali media that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible for inciting violence, both on the streets and online.
International human rights organisations have also expressed concern, warning that misuse of social media platforms like TikTok has increasingly become a trigger for communal unrest in South Asia. They called on governments to balance freedom of expression with responsible digital regulation.
Situation Under Control, Say Authorities
By late evening, officials claimed the situation was largely under control, though security remained tight in affected districts. The India–Nepal border was expected to reopen fully once stability was assured.
The incident has once again underlined how viral social media content can rapidly inflame communal tensions, posing serious challenges to internal security and regional stability in an interconnected digital age.
