Queens, New York: New York State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani has strongly condemned pro-Hamas slogans that were reportedly raised during a protest held outside a synagogue in Queens, calling them “dangerous, unacceptable, and deeply harmful” amid heightened global and local tensions.
In a statement issued after the incident, Mamdani said that expressions supporting Hamas — a group designated as a terrorist organization by the United States — have no place in New York City, particularly outside a place of worship. He emphasized that criticism of Israeli government policies must never cross into support for violence, terrorism, or antisemitism.
“Hamas is responsible for horrific acts of violence against civilians,” Mamdani said. “Any slogans or rhetoric that glorify or justify such actions are wrong, full stop. Protests must never become platforms for hate or intimidation.”
Incident Sparks Alarm in Jewish Community
The protest, which took place outside a synagogue in Queens, drew swift condemnation from Jewish community leaders and local officials, who expressed concern over rising antisemitic incidents in the city since the escalation of violence in the Middle East. While details about the organizers and participants remain under review, authorities confirmed that the situation was monitored closely to prevent escalation.
Community representatives said that demonstrations near religious institutions, especially when accompanied by inflammatory slogans, create fear and insecurity among worshippers.
Balancing Free Speech and Public Safety
Mamdani, a progressive lawmaker known for advocating Palestinian human rights, underscored the need to distinguish between peaceful advocacy and extremist rhetoric. He reiterated his support for free speech and lawful protest, while stressing that New Yorkers must reject hate in all its forms.
“We can and must advocate for Palestinian freedom and human rights without invoking organizations that commit war crimes or targeting Jewish New Yorkers,” he said.
Calls for Unity and De-escalation
City officials urged protesters to exercise restraint and called on law enforcement to remain vigilant around religious sites. The New York Police Department has increased patrols near synagogues and other sensitive locations across the city as a precaution.
The incident comes amid a broader national debate over protests related to the Israel–Gaza conflict, with officials across the political spectrum warning against importing overseas conflicts into local communities.
Mamdani concluded by calling for solidarity, dialogue, and nonviolent advocacy, stating that New York’s strength lies in its diversity and its commitment to protecting all communities from hate and intimidation.
