Bangladesh Hindu Youth Dies After Beating, Poisoning in Sunamganj — Surge in Minority Violence Raises Alarm.

Sunamganj, Bangladesh | January 10, 2026:
A 19-year-old Hindu youth, Joy Mohapatra, has died after allegedly being beaten, humiliated and forced to consume poison in Dirai Upazila of Sunamganj district, local media reported, highlighting growing concerns over violence and intimidation targeting religious minorities in Bangladesh.

Attack Details — Beating, Humiliation, Poisoning

According to IANS / Sylhet View 24, Joy had bought a mobile phone for 5,500 Bangladeshi Taka from grocery shop owner Amirul Islam, paying 2,000 Taka upfront and agreeing to pay the balance in weekly installments. While most installments were paid on time, the final payment was delayed.

When Joy visited the shop on Thursday to pay the installment, he was allegedly beaten and humiliated by the shopkeeper, and his mobile phone was seized. Relatives said that after the assault, Joy was coerced or forced into consuming poison at the shop premises.

Health Decline and Death

Joy was first taken to the Dirai Upazila Health Complex, but his condition deteriorated quickly. He was then referred to the M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet, where he died from poisoning-related complications on Friday morning.

Police Statement and Legal Response

Dirai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Enamul Haque Chowdhury confirmed that authorities had inspected the scene and were informed about the case. He stated that legal action would be taken if an official complaint is filed, even as no arrests have been reported so far.

Pattern of Violence Against Hindus

Joy’s death comes amid a broader pattern of violent incidents targeting Bangladesh’s Hindu minority. According to the same IANS report, this incident marks the eighth such case in just 22 days and the fourth this week in different districts, including Naogaon and Narsingdi, involving attacks, alleged mob violence, and deaths of Hindu men.

Community and Rights Concerns

Local civil society leaders and minority rights activists have expressed alarm over the increase in harassment and targeted violence against Hindus. There have also been reports of vandalism, attacks on temples and homes in various parts of Sunamganj in recent years, reflecting ongoing communal tensions in some areas.

Observers say that repeated cases involving beating, humiliation and deaths linked to coercion or intimidation reflect deeper social tensions and a failure of authorities to guarantee safety for vulnerable communities.
