Dhaka, February 17: Bangladesh entered a new political phase on Tuesday as Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief Tarique Rahman was sworn in as the country’s Prime Minister, ending two years of political uncertainty and unrest.
Rahman took the oath of office following his party’s decisive victory in the parliamentary elections held on February 12. The BNP-led alliance secured 212 out of 299 contested seats in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament), gaining a clear majority and paving the way for the formation of a new government.
The election was the first national vote since the ouster of former Prime Minister , whose removal from office followed months of deadly protests and widespread political turmoil. The country has since experienced a prolonged period of instability marked by demonstrations and governance challenges.
Rahman now faces the significant task of stabilizing the nation, restoring law and order, and overseeing economic recovery and reconstruction efforts. Observers say rebuilding public trust and ensuring political reconciliation will be among the new administration’s immediate priorities.
The swearing-in ceremony marks a major shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape, signaling the beginning of a new chapter after years of intense rivalry between the BNP and the Awami League.
