Wayanad: The fifth annual Sugathakumari Award for the best eco-friendly and green school in Wayanad district was presented to Odappallam School at a special ceremony held on the school campus.
The award, jointly instituted by the Wayanad Nature Conservation Society and the Hume Centre for Ecology and Wildlife Biology, recognizes outstanding contributions by educational institutions toward environmental protection and sustainable practices.
The award was presented by noted tribal artist and poet Sukumaran Chaligadda, who is also a member of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi. School Headmistress K. Kamala, along with students, received the award. The honor includes a memento, a cash prize, and a collection of works by renowned environmentalist-poet Sugathakumari.
The function was inaugurated by Sherein Abdulla, Chairperson of the Education Standing Committee of Bathery Municipality. Advocate P. Chathukkutti, a cultural and environmental activist, presided over the event. N. Badusha and Pushpa Teacher delivered memorial speeches remembering Sugathakumari and her contributions to literature and environmental activism.
Addressing the students after presenting the award, Sukumaran Chaligadda emphasized the importance of understanding and protecting forests and nature, which form the foundation of human survival. He encouraged children to observe and cherish birds, butterflies, and wildlife. He also recited his poem “The Song of My She-Pig” and other poems centered on forests and nature.
Students presented selected poems of Sugathakumari as part of the cultural program, making the ceremony both an environmental and literary tribute.
The award highlights the growing role of schools in promoting environmental awareness and sustainable living practices among young generations.
