Land-related clash turns fatal; police arrest neighbour, investigation underway
Dhaka / Kurigram:
A 60-year-old man was killed following a dispute over land near his residence in northern Bangladesh’s Kurigram district, triggering tension in the area. The incident occurred in Joydev Malsabari village under Rajarhat upazila, police confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as Madhu Chandra Shil (60), a resident of the village. Police have arrested his neighbour Abed Ali in connection with the incident, while efforts are on to identify and question others allegedly involved.
What Police Say
According to Bangladeshi police, the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon when Madhu Chandra Shil began planting vegetable saplings in front of his house. A dispute reportedly arose over the boundary and ownership of the land, an issue that had caused friction between the families earlier as well.
Police said Abed Ali, along with his wife Lucky Begum and other family members, objected to the activity and uprooted the plants, leading to a heated argument that later escalated.
“This was primarily a land and boundary-related dispute. One accused has been arrested and others are being identified. Legal action will be taken against everyone involved,”
— a senior Kurigram district police officer told local media.
Victim Dies After Being Taken to Hospital
Madhu Chandra Shil was taken to a nearby hospital after the incident, where doctors declared him dead. His body was later sent for post-mortem examination as part of the ongoing investigation, police said.
Minority Angle Raises Concern
The victim belonged to the Hindu minority community, and some local residents and rights groups have raised concerns over the safety of minorities in rural border areas. Several Bangladeshi media outlets reported that the incident has renewed debate over minority protection, though police said the investigation is still ongoing.
“At this stage, we are examining all angles, including personal rivalry and social factors. No conclusion should be drawn before the investigation is completed,”
— police officials stated.
Security Tightened in the Area
Following the incident, police increased patrolling in Joydev Malsabari village to prevent further unrest. Local administration officials said the situation remains under control.
“Law and order will be maintained strictly. No one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands,”
— Rajarhat upazila administration said in a statement.
Investigation Continues
The arrested accused will be produced before a local court, while statements from witnesses are being recorded. Police said further arrests may follow based on evidence.
