BJP’s Massive Victory in Bengal’s Falta Seat: Debangshu Panda Wins by 1.09 Lakh Votes.

In a major political development in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a landslide victory in the Falta Assembly constituency, with BJP candidate Debangshu Panda defeating his nearest rival by more than 1.09 lakh votes.

The result is being viewed as one of the most significant electoral upsets in the state, as Falta had long been considered a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

According to the final results:

  • BJP candidate Debangshu Panda received around 1,49,666 votes.
  • CPI(M) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi finished second with about 40,645 votes.
  • Congress candidate Abdur Razzak Molla came third with around 10,084 votes.
  • TMC candidate Jahangir Khan slipped to fourth place with roughly 7,783 votes.

Why the Falta Election Became Nationally Important

The Falta constituency in South 24 Parganas district turned into a high-profile political battleground after the Election Commission ordered a complete repoll in all 285 booths.

The repoll was conducted on May 21 under heavy central security deployment following allegations of:

  • EVM tampering,
  • electoral irregularities,
  • and manipulation of polling-related footage during the earlier voting process held on April 29.

More than 87% voter turnout was recorded during the repoll, one of the highest participation rates in recent Bengal electoral history.

TMC Candidate Withdrew Before Repoll

In a dramatic political twist, TMC candidate Jahangir Khan announced just days before the repoll that he was stepping away from the contest “for Falta’s interest.”

However, since nominations could not legally be withdrawn at that stage, his name remained on the EVMs.

Political observers believe this significantly weakened the TMC’s organisational strength on polling day.

BJP Calls It a Sign of “Political Change” in Bengal

BJP leaders described the victory as evidence of growing public support for the party in West Bengal.

After the result, Debangshu Panda thanked voters and said the people of Falta had voted for “change” and “fear-free democracy.”

The Falta result is also being interpreted as a symbolic breakthrough in the Diamond Harbour region, traditionally considered politically influential for the TMC.

Heavy Security and Peaceful Voting

The Election Commission deployed:

  • 35 companies of CAPF personnel,
  • 30 quick response teams,
  • and extensive surveillance arrangements to ensure peaceful voting during the repoll.

Several voters reportedly stated that they were able to vote “without fear” for the first time in years.
