NEW DELHI: Following the assumption of power by the BJP government led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approximately 16,000 hoardings and 100,000 posters featuring former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have been removed from across Delhi. The action was carried out by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
This extensive cleanup operation began after Rekha Gupta was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi on February 20, 2025. Since taking office, Gupta has repeatedly taken veiled jabs at Arvind Kejriwal, stating at a recent event that she is “not a Chief Minister who governs from a ‘Sheesh Mahal’ (glass palace), but one who works 24×7 with the public.”
Rekha Gupta and other BJP leaders have accused the Kejriwal government of misusing public funds for advertising and propaganda. Gupta had also severely criticized Kejriwal’s administration during the presentation of the Delhi Budget 2025-26. “You made promises, and we will fulfill them. You insulted governments in other states; we will establish unity and work together,” she declared.
Furthermore, a Delhi court had previously ordered the registration of an FIR against former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and others in connection with the alleged misuse of public funds for erecting illegal hoardings. The court’s directive pertained to a case dating back to 2019 concerning hoardings erected in Dwarka.
The new government’s move is widely seen as a direct consequence of its critique of the previous Kejriwal administration’s advertising policies and public spending.
